Mitt fiddles while Fort Collins burns

That'd be the headline if Mitt and his minions had their way.

The largest wildfire in the county's history is torching the tinder-dry foothills 15 miles WEST (not east, as original diary said; see update below) of Fort Collins. According to the incident information system, as of Monday evening, it had "burned an estimated 41,140 acres and continues to grow...fire remains zero percent contained Monday night...one confirmed death...approximately 400 personnel on scene." If you're not one of the thousands of evacuees in the path of the fire, or hosting friends who evacuated, you're staying inside as much as you can because the smoke is everywhere. Officials and the Red Cross had to move the first evacuation location because of it. Large animals go to the county fairgrounds, and the local humane society is overflowing to area veterinary hospitals who volunteer space.  rblinne's Sunday diary has a photo. Fort Collins folks are generous, and donations are coming in from all over (thank you, if you're one of the givers). Here are links if you have a few bucks to spare:  Denver Red Cross and Larimer County Humane Society.

This isn't even the largest wildfire at the moment -- that honor goes to New Mexico, and Arizona is experiencing their share.

But then there's Willard Mitt Romney, gleefully fiddling away, sneering at President Obama's call for more teachers, police, and firefighters. And his surrogates doing the terrorist fist-bump and saying "Yeah! What HE said!"

Maybe Mitt realizes he's in a bit of trouble, since now he won't  say whether or not he'd cut firefighters. And even the Rethug's trained lapdog Fox "News" has taken down the video of it.

When the High Park Fire finally burns through its fuel of pine-beetle-killed trees and hundreds of human structures (euphamisms for people's homes, barns, and the stuff in them), the air will clear and we'll pick up our lives again. We'll owe a deep debt of gratitude to the crazy men and women who go to meet a fire head on, instead of sensibly running away like hell. And hopefully we'll remember in November that Mitt wants to cut firefighters, meaning next time there wouldn't be 400 personnel on scene to protect us, and maybe the headlines really would be "Fort Collins burns."

I hope Mitt is delusional enough to waste money trying to compete in Colorado, 'cause it ain't gonna happen. We'll still be able to smell the smoke he's trying to blow up our collective arses.

10:18 AM PT: Uh, as ColoTim was so kind to point out, the fire is 15 miles WEST of Fort Collins, in the mountains, not east. Duh!
